Rescuing Bees and bee colonies

At Melbourne Beehives, we bred new colonies for local beekeepers and beekeeping enthusiasts.

Bee Swarms, transfer to a new home

Each season at Melbourne Beehives, we rescue bees lot of bees. We help the local community by assisting residents in relocating the bees at their property or taking away the bee swarm and finding their new home.

Thinking of raising honey bees in your backyard?

The bee varieties are Italian and Carniolan. These types of bees are calm and visually distinguishable by their colouring and abdominal stripes. The Italian type is golden brown with black abdominal stripes. Carniolan type is visually similar to Italian but darker.

We produce new queen bees each season for our new bee colonies by using splits.

The packages that we offer are new colonies in new or nearly new eight-frame boxes.

Local beekeeping in Melbourne

The typical content of the package follows:

  • Queen bee: Italian or Carniolan.
  • Include a Pest Control Strategy – Against a small hive beetle, we include a container filled with olive oil. This container successfully protects the bee colony from the Small Hive Beetle (SHB).
  • In the box, all eight frames are with wax foundation. Four to five frames are with queen bee, bees, new brood and honey.
  • Bees: Depending on the time of the season, you will get bees at different stages of their life. A young queen bee, workers (female) and drones (male) bees.
  • Non-vented bottom board.
  • Painted eight frames box
  • Lid for the box
  • Plastic adjustable entrance that does not harm the bee wings
Bee Swarm removal without harming bees

The “wild” bees I may name those bees collected in the wilderness, or local suburb during a swarming season in Spring. When bees are swarming, they are very calm, almost friendly but I would not poke them with my finger to test their patience.

They are called “wild” when a swarm leaves their original hive and looks for a new place of residence without knowing their source bee colony.

From my experience, if you catch one of these swarms and house them properly and look after them, then they usually turn into very calm bees and healthy bee colonies.
